Horticulture production in 2022-23 estimated at record 351 million tonnes1: The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has released the third advance estimate of horticulture production for 2022-23, which shows a record output of 351 million tonnes, an increase of 3.8 per cent over the previous year and 8.6 per cent over the last five years’ average production.
Centre approves Quality Control Order for mandatory certification of cotton bales; to be notified soon2: The Centre has approved a Quality Control Order (QCO) for mandatory certification of cotton bales by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), which will be notified soon. The QCO aims to ensure quality and traceability of cotton bales and prevent adulteration and fraud in the domestic and export markets.
Tomato prices at Mother Dairy’s Safal stores nearly double in a week3: The retail price of tomato at Mother Dairy’s Safal stores, which operate in Delhi-NCR, has nearly doubled in a week to Rs 58 per kg on Sunday due to supply disruption caused by heavy rains in key growing states, including Karnataka. The prices were at Rs 25-30 per kg around June 15, before rising gradually to Rs 40, then Rs 60 and finally the current high rates.
US agency predicts El Nino likely to affect monsoon; know how it will impact crops2: The US-based National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has predicted that El Nino, a weather phenomenon that affects the Indian monsoon, is likely to develop by September or October this year. El Nino is associated with warmer than average sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean, which can weaken the monsoon winds and cause droughts in India. This can adversely affect the kharif crops such as rice, pulses, oilseeds and cotton, which depend on timely and adequate rainfall.
